Over time, these festivities evolved and merged with the Christian holiday of St. Valentine's Day, named after the martyred Christian saint, Valentine of Rome.
While there are various legends surrounding St. Valentine, there's no direct link between him and romantic love. In fact, it wasn't until the Middle Ages that the association between St. Valentine and romantic love began to take hold.
In the 14th century, the poet Geoffrey Chaucer popularized the idea of Valentine's Day as a day for expressing love in his poem "Parlement of Foules." This notion was further strengthened in the following centuries, particularly during the Victorian era when exchanging romantic cards and gifts became popular.
